Kalen Hogan celebrates the beginning of spring 2026 and being out on the town with his latest single “Isopogon”. The new track “Isopogon” feels adventurous and energetic, with screaming lyrics and loud guitars. Kalen sings of mates getting out, looking for a good time and just vibing together. Metaphorically, he turns them into bees, buzzing about town, looking for pollen and hitting the jackpot in a patch of flowering Isopogon.
Kalen debuted on the local Central Coast music scene in late 2022. He quickly captivated audiences through his evocative songwriting and unique sound. Kalen's beginnings reached an early milestone with the release of his first album, Isolation, in May 2023, at just 17 years of age. Exploring themes of introspection and the human experience, Isolation embodies the solitude experienced during its creation amidst pandemic lockdowns. Songs such as "It’s You" and "Stoned and Cold" highlight Kalen's talent for merging melancholic lyrics with engaging melodies. His vocal quality is reminiscent of Thom Yorke and the late Jeff Buckley, while his musical style pays tribute to the bands of the 1990s grunge era.
In 2024/25, Kalen continued to expand his music, releasing five singles that solidified his reputation as a creative songwriter. In 2026, Kalen hit the local venues with “Gone” and promoted the upcoming release of “Isopogon”, his last single for the year. Coupled with his growing live presence, this prolific young songwriter is an emerging talent that is worth following.

“This song is about that impossible moment when you know someone has to go, and life will go on regardless of how you feel,” Kalen shares. “It’s honest, raw, and something I think a lot of people have experienced—trying to protect yourself from heartbreak, even as you hope for more time together.” Each verse captures a guy's attempt to talk himself out of loving his partner, even as he wishes she would stay just a little longer.
Recorded over a couple of days at Damien Gerard Studio, Kalen was inspired to add in some female vocal backing in the pre-chorus and chorus. Not pre-planned and with no one around to call, he asked his younger sister, a talented vocalist in her own right, to help. With only that afternoon left in the studio, his sister came straight after school. “Normally, opera is her jam, but my sister is a versatile singer and great at harmonies. Time is money when recording, and given the short notice, I was super grateful she was able to put down the vocals like a pro.” The song has a laid-back, cruisy feel and introducing a female backing vocal to the chorus added not only contrast but a unique richness to the track.

It describes hallucinogenic episodes and schizophrenic-like symptoms. We are taken on a journey with a person who is well into literally losing their mind. The exhaustion felt after these episodes leave people drained and disconnected, which has been described as mindless state of being.

The vocals build up to a final bridge that declares time is stolen and quickly turned into a memory. There is a strong desire to return to a moment that you know is over. The guitar conveys the wistful yearning through its cord progression, crunch, and echo. The musical composition and lyric abruptly finishes on the last word, amplifying the ‘end’.

‘On the Phone’ sings of the challenge of being stuck in today’s dating apps, offline from life. This song narrates the tale of a mate watching two separate friends lost on their phones, scrolling to date strangers, whilst he knows they would be perfectly matched, if they just got out of their phones and rooms.
The chords and melody for the track had been bouncing around in Kalen’s mind whilst he finished off the ‘Isolation’ album in 2023 but the story behind the lyrics had yet to unfold. Kalen believes ‘On the Phone’ has a bit of an attitude and would never have fitted in with his melancholier sounding tracks of the previous year.

From the initial single born from the pandemic lockdowns, the songs transition through: relationships left behind; feeling alienated or lost; realising the finite time you have with those you love and understanding your outlook is only relevant to your perspective.
The album ‘Isolation’ was initially created in a time of forced introspective thinking. Skilfully, the tracks are matched with some soul-searching guitar solos that echo the intensity of the lyrics. Tracks like 'Beliefs' and 'Not Even A Friend' are tracks that fight back with some big drums and up beat spicy guitar chords.
The dissonant harmonies and chord progression on the album are a subtle nod to Kalen's respect for the 1990's Seattle Grunge scene. The album is alternative rock and with the purposeful lack of heavy distortion, the sound stays true to its indie roots.

Kalen Hogan was 15, when first inspired to write his song, Help Me I’m Dying. At the time, he was impacted by a story he’d watched of a young person dying in the arms of their parents. Kalen wrote the song to better understand how it made him feel and decided to add the imagined soul’s transition, to remind us, we aren’t just the physical form. It’s a song about wanting to be saved but equally wanting to leave a pained broken body.
